    93 SNOB Engine Oil Leak

Just bought the boat this year and now realize I have an oil leak. I appears to be the oil pan. I will be changing the oil pump and screen (just so I know its new), valve cover gaskets and oil pan gasket. The engine is a PCM 351.

My question is how hard is it to pull the motor. It doesn't look difficult at all but I didn't know if there were any secrets I needed to know about like out drive shaft to transom alignment or anything like that.

    Any info is helpful.

Not too difficult if you have some mechanical knowledge. TAKE YOUR BATTERY CABLES OFF THE BATTERY!!!!!!! Take lots of pictures, get everything you can out of the way, unhook everything and lift out. Careful with spilled fuel. Fuel, sparks and fiberglas make a fine bonfire.

The engine/shaft will have to be realigned when you install. Many threads on this.

If the engine has less than 1500 hrs, I would not bother with the oil pump. They almost never fail. I would, since everything is going to be apart, replace the damper plate for the transmission. Cheap insurance and they do break. There should be a screen in the bottom of the trans that you should check. I would also check/replace the cutlass bearing in the strut for the shaft, repack the shaft log and the rudder while you are there.

The cutlass bearing will be a lot easier with the engine out. You can pull the prop off and take the shaft out in the boat.

Again, while at it, I would replace the exaust gaskets as well as the riser gaskets. Much easier to get at broken bolts with the engine out.

Most engine "cherry pickers" will not lift high enough to get the engine over the deck.

Btw, I put clean truck mud flaps (I have a bunch of trucks) over the carpet. You can be as careful as possible, but you are still going to track stuff on your carpet.

Don't get in a rush, have somebody help with the pull and install and should be done in a day. Line up the parts, use quality stuff(not Autozone) and have fun.

Cold adult beverages do not make you a better mechanic.
