    gt40 died

I had my 98 air at the lake for the first time this year....all seemed to be running fine until I decided to throttle up to about 32mph........it seemed to be running fine, motor sounded good and then all of the sudden the engine died........i immediatedly opened the engine box and saw a little bit of smoke...not much and the motor seemed really really hot......
when i was at full throttle my oil pressure was around 50 psi and temp showed around 160 degrees..... i sat there for min temp went to 170..................but nothing higher.........i wonder if my gauge was stuck or something..
oil is at the correct level and looks good

try and turn the engine over....and would not start.......try again , and then again and then again........nothing..
i wait another 5mins and finally get the engine to turn over...but dang does it sound rough.......it is idling sooo rough like it wants to die... sounded like it was gasping for fuel and i heard some weird noises...loose noises from the engine ever soo often........i make it too the dock and do not kill it untill trailerd.......havent tried to start it again..

does this sound familiar for anyone.......anyone have any ideas?

Clogged Fuel Filter? Distributor/spark issue? Any fouling on your plugs? Maybe look at those first...

From a last known good configuration standpoint, check each plug boot to ensure that it is correctly attached to the plugs. I had mine give me a lot of trouble starting once, only to have it finally start and run lousy after I changed my plug wires and had one or two that I thought I had on there fine that, in fact, were loose or had somehow come loose.

When you say that you tried to turn the engine over and it wouldn't start, did the starter crank the engine?

Next time you go out, bring an empty juice bottle with you. When it dies, remove the plug from the fuel control cell, (black canister that fuel line goes into) and see how much gas comes out. Should get about 2/3rds of cell worth. I had the same problem. Ended up being the low pressure fuel pump. Would only get a few drops out of cell after it stalled. Problem was intermittent. Good Luck!

Did you happen to put in a new water pump impeller? If so, perhaps it was assembled wrong (upside-down) - OR - if you didn't replace it, perhaps you should have...

It sounds a bit like it overheated. I realize you said the gauge didn't move up much from 160...and it wouldn't have moved if there was not water in the engine to circulate around the thermocouple probe for the gauge.

The water pump is easy to get to, you may want to pull it apart & see if it looks like it was working right or not. If so, the engine probably overheated & you may have some serious damage to contend with.

In any event, I wish you the best! Hopefully it's something simple/easy to fix.
