Transmission Oil Cooler Replacement - 2000 SAN

When replacing the transmission oil cooler, what do I need to know/watch out for as far as the transmission oil is goes? I assume some oil will leak? Does a lot leak? Is there a way to keep it from leaking? Should I let it leak and top off when I am finished?
Thank you in advance for your assistance.

suck the trans oil out first. then just a little will be left in the lines going to the cooler. thatll just go into the bilge. chances are if you are changing the cooler, you need to change the fluid anyhow.

What made you decide to change the trans cooler?

This is based on my experience with a 1.23 to 1 transmission in a direct drive boat.
Suck the oil out, just like the first step of an oil change.
Disconnect the top fitting on the transmission, that goes to the cooler.
Blow air into the hose going to the cooler.
This moves a lot of the oil in the cooler back into the sump of the transmission.
Suck the oil out of the transmission again.

        Now, change the oil cooler.
Make sure you check the oil level after starting the boat, with the engine running, and after shifting from forward to reverse, and back to neutral. Do not pull the dipstick out of the transmission with the boat in gear.

Thanks for the feedback. There is some corrosion at the bottom of one of the "end caps" that is slightly leaking. I believe it is sucking air when the boat is running, not allowing proper water to flow through the system.

This is a V-drive but I will take the advice to remove the hose from the transmission and blow the oil in the hoses back into the transmission.

Going out to work on it now....we'll see how it goes!
