    Clunk when shifting????

I have a 1996 Nautique 196. It is in excellent condition and runs great. People are always surprised to find out it is almost 15 years old. My problem is minor..... When I shift from fwd or reverse into neutral there is a "clunk". This does not happen when shifting into fwd or reverse, only out. There are no other symptoms. No shimmie, vibrations, or problems of any sort. I am tempted to ignore the sound, but that generally leads to no good.

Any ideas on the clunk? Or how to get rid of this?

    Thanks!

    Fixed

FYI- Simple tranny fluid change was the fix.

I am guessing the level was not correct.
Here is how I check mine.
With the boat floating, and off the trailer, start the engine. Shift into forward, neutral, reverse, and back to neutral. it does not matter if you do reverse first, or not, but shift in to both. With the engine still running, and the transmission in neutral, pull the dipstick, and look at the level. It should be between the two lines.
If the engine is cold, near the low line is fine, and when the engine is hot, near the top line is fine. Just between the lines.

It would not hurt to check the propeller nut to see if it is snug, also.

        loose prop?

Make sure the prop hub is up on the shaft and not loose.
