I have an 84' SN2001, one of my exhaust hoses developed a leak so I decided to replace both sides. I thought I would go ahead and replace the manifolds as well, as they are extremly rusty. I managed to get both risers off, both are partially plugged, is it worth taking them somewhere to have them sandbasted? or should I just replace them. I cant get my mainifolds off, even after soaking them in PB blaster. We only got one bolt free with an impact wrench. Also some of the bolts are so rusty they would have to be cut off. I dont think there are any leaks on the manifolds(yet). The gaskets between the manifolds and risers were disintigraded and will have to be replaced. Also my gaskets under the valve covers are leaking really bad on both sides, can these be changed without taking the exhaust manifolds off? Is it worth takinig it somewhere to get the manifolds off or should I leave them alone until they leak?

You will be best off to replace the manifolds AND risers. If you do not replace them at the same time it will be very difficult to get the gaskets to seal. This can result in water leaking back on the heads(bad!). Once you have them off you can replace the valve cover gasket at the same time.
Some additional recommendations are to use anti-seize grease(the silver stuff) on the manifold and riser bolts. Use the high temp gasket sealant(the red stuff) with the manifold to riser gasket, only use a very thin coat.
Additionally, I take my risers off about every 100 hours or two years and put in a new gasket and clean out the loose debris(rust!) out of the jacket.
Good luck, take care of your engine and it will take care of you!
