They go inside the 1" tubing........check out my photo album and you can see them on my vent line.

I have 3/4 inch vent lines which work great. The only reason I am going to add check valves is so the sacs "shrivel" up when they are empty. I always have about 50-60# of water that the pump cant suction out b/c of air flow from the ventEric, Phoenix AZ
