Is it safe to run VR1 20W-50 in the PCM Excalibur 330? Thanks

Wel, I was going to say yes because here in Texas I do not run my boat below about 80 degrees. Since you live in Washington state I wonder if you really want the heavier 20W-50 oil and why? Safe maybe, wise? If you do let the engine warm-up good before you hammer it.
I would not run it and PCM would advise otherwise.sigpic

I run it in our Mustang, and will likely run it in my 340 when that is completed. I run Mobil1 15w50 in the Python. I don't really think living in WA has a whole lot to do with it as it is hot as blazes there in the summer. Just like here in MN. You should be more concerned with simply assuring your motor is getting oil with the proper ZDDP levels. The list of which includes VR1 20w-50.the WakeSlayer

I believe the ZDDP is critical for the Ford engines with flat tappets, and don't come into play with the Excal 300 because it has rollers. I've heard that some racing oils lack the detergents and other additives that these engines need, because racing oil is changed after each race and the engines are rebuilt/replaced regularly.
There are a lot of people running Shell Rotella, and it is what I use. If you search the site, you will find lots of opinions on the best oil to use, and big debates on synthetic vs. dino. If you really want to delve into oil, visit the attached web site. Grab a case of beer, plenty of food, and prepare for a long weekend read.

armewu - I believe you will see 15w-40 listed in the engine manual, at least that is what is listed in the 2006. It is hard to find - but it is there. The problem is 15w40 is not common, so I use 10w4006 Ski Nautique 196 SE (2010)

Exactly.
If it is a roller and not a flat tappet, then you can run whatever you want basically. Any flat tappet motor needs proper amounts of ZDDP to keep the engine from wearing. Keep in mind that valvoline VR1 has lowered the ZDDP levels, as has rotella in the past couple of years. Old info is bad info when formulas change to make the oils.
The new ford diesel oil looks to have a very high ZDDP level, and so do some Castrol oils. Redline synth in at least 1 weight formula has proper ZDDP levels, but most synthetics don't.

That is a good question but we are surely led to believe that these 2 items are mutually exclusive.
Now if you don't care about your catalytic converters health, then there is an easy answer to that. Since most of us don't have cats, it's usually an easy question. Even with cataytic converters on new boats, what if any post manufacture testing will be given?

I had used the Rotella 15-40 diesel oil at last oil change in my 343, but I was told by a mechanic friend that the diesel oil has too much "Ash" in it for the gasoline engines. I did a little internet research and that seemed to be substantiated. He told me that Lucas made a great engine oil for this application, but that using Mobil 1 15-50 was the best alternative.

This is a pretty good place to look at oils and other lubes.
