Perko Switch Wiring SANTE 2001 GT 40 (2 Batteries)

I am wondering how to wire a Perko Switch with two batteries?
The instructions say to wire the common to the starter motor? This seems odd to me I would think it would be wired to the alternator can someone please advise me on this matter.
I will attach a diagram of how I have it wired exactly in a few minutes.
If someone can tell me how they have theirs wired and where the starter motor wire is coming from or the alternator wire; or, if they had to run a new wire to the starter motor that would be great.
    Thanks

ID:	361019here is the diagram that I was referring to:
    -Is this hooked up correctly?
-What is hooked up to common switch? and where is it located on engine? (roughly)

I also attached Perko Instructions - I am going off Diagram 1

Common on the Perko switch is connected to the cable coming from the starter relay (your existing positive cable), 1 and 2 go to the respective batteries.

The way you have your drawing, you are constantly using bat 1, regardless of the switch. Your positive line coming from the motor needs to go to the common on the perko. Since you have it going to bat.1, and both negs going to the block, bat 1 is always connected in position 1, 2, both, and off. Bat 2 will only be connected in position both.

Long story short, bat 1 needs to go to one side, bat 2 to the other, and the motor to the common.

Okay, so I hooked up the positive cable to the common connection on the Perko switch and then created a seperate line from battery 1 positive cable to battery 1 connection on Perko switch. However, when I switch between batteries my stereo still runs and I can start my boat from either battery?
This doesnt make sense to me. I attempted to wire it in a way that the boat stereo would only run off battery 2, motor would run off battery 1, and obviously common for both. I only have amps grounded to battery 2 and powered off battery 2? So why is it when I switch 2 battery 1 the stereo still works?
Note: when I switch to off...the off switch does work and kills all the batteries.
              Thanks for helping to!

I believe you want to run the positive line from the starter solenoid to the common. No positive battery cable should go to common. Look at your diagram #1.

Where is the starter solenoid located on the GT 40? I think you are right; So where is the wire that is coming off the solenoid? Or am I running a new wire to the Solenoid.
                  Thanks

If you wired your stereo directly to batt 2 ( pos and neg ) your stereo will work regardless of switch position, and it will be running off of batt 2, im assuming you have a switched wire hooked up to ignition to turn your stereo on? this would explain why it turns off when you switch your batteries to the off position.

The point of the perko is to allow you to select which batt the entire boat is running off, so yes you will be able to start your boat when you have the switch on batt 1 or 2.

Sounds like it is hooked up properly if that is your intention.
