Leaking water strainer

My water strainer is leaking from the top. I'm afraid to tighten it down more than hand tight because i dont want to risk breaking the plastic bowl. Any tricks? How tight should I go. My next step may be to buy a new o-ring.

Leaking strainer

I use a sythetic waterproof lubricant (vasoline consistency) on both the threads of the plastic bowl and around the o-ring and have never had a leak or problems removing the bowl to clean it out. Seems to tighten a little more but still unscrews without having to use any oil filter type strap wrenches.
