    Retaining cable for platform pin

    I found the full platform retaining pin assembly on Whitelake, but I only need the cable. I need two and rather not spend $45. Anyone knows where I can get just the cable or know of a quality improvised replacement that will last? I miss not having them attached and I know it’s only a mater of time till one gets left behind.

    Try your local fishing tackle supply and get some plastic coated stranded SS wire leader. You will need some crimping barrels and the crimping pliers. Go prepared with your parts and maybe they can crimp them for you and you won't have to buy the pliers. Buy a heavy leader close to your wire diameter as possible...although even the smallest should be adequate. The smaller cable will get kinked up.

    I suspect:

    Pliers= 10 to 15 $
    small roll of leader = $4
    baggy of matching barrels = $4

    You can then make other wire cables for use around the house or for attaching tags, etc. I use to make my own offshore fishing lures/leaders and it is quite easy and cheap.

    Here is an example of the crimping tool: http://www.seaisletackle.com/browse.cfm/4,1753.html

      Not much of a how to, but I like to follow up when I get some good information. I ended up using the Berkley 7 Strand Sevalon nylon coated fishing leader / cable (250lbs test) and a couple A11 standard sleeves. I drilled a small hole in my step brackets and attached from there. It cost me $12.00 and I have enough line and sleeves to last me a life time.

      It looks like the stock wire is held to a bolt with a crimp terminal ring that broke easily. I think this looks nicer and will last much longer. Thanks Airtool!
