    propellar shaft stuffing box

i was looking at stuffing box while i had my floorboards out putting by steering cable in. That project went perfect, thats to all with the advice. you could not even move the 2005 cable by hand and the teeth are almost gone in the center section that is used the most. i now have zero play and can move the steering wheel by turning the rudder with two fingers.

there is a collar on the drive shaft between stuffing box and tranny. it is a split collar that locks with allen heads. mine looks like it is rubbing the brass stuffing box. should it be this close. it almost looks like it is worn into it.

nobody has even moved it, nor does it look like it has moved.

There should be a little space in between the stuffing bot nut, and the collar.

what is the collar used for. does it prevent the shaft from pulling out in reverse.

The collar is a redundant safety device. If the propeller shaft ever came disconnected from the transmission coupler, it is to hold the propeller shaft in the boat.
