    few questions

    i usually take my 83 nautique to the marina to get fluids changed, just because i dont feel like crawling down there to do it, well with the bad economy i am going to start doing it myself. i did the motor oil and filter. but now i am to the trans. its a 351w with 1:1 velvet drive. how many quarts does it call for? i cant seem to find my owners manual it musta got lost in the last 30 years. also when i winterized i drained and filled with anti freeze and when i just went to pull the block plug for ****s and giggles it just looks like water in there? no color? should i worry? i have been doing it the same way for 5 years never a problem. but just never checked it....i changed the oil, no milkyness. so i didnt worry. all freeze plugs still in tact and all the risers and manifolds look good with a flashlight.

    I am pretty sure its ok. i did start it without the belts for a minute after i changed the oil just to circulate everything and it seemed ok. but i guess i wont really know till i start it up with the belts on. thanks for your help again guys.

    The basic answer for how much transmission fluid is how ever much you take out. You will have to use a pump to siphon the Tran. Fluid out the fill hole, and because of that, you never get it all out. So, siphon into a plastic jug that you can get a decent estimate of volume on and then refill accordingly. You will want to take a quart with you and double check the level once its floating. Just as a double check.

    As for the antifreeze, how much did you put in and how did you put it in? BTW, I like to change the oil at the end of the season as opposed to letting the old oil sit in the motor all winter. Some people say it will build up tannins as it sits, but I suspect its not overly important as long as its changed regularly.

      i used like 7 gallons of anti freeze. dumped it in the strainer till i was thru 7 gallons, was coming out the exhaust as pink as could be.

      i have a drill pump to get the trans fluid out.

      next year i will change it before rather than after. its just how ive always done it but that def makes sense.

        you should have plenty of antifreeze in the block if you used that much, usually you dont get all of the water out when you drain, so the antifreeze mixes with the remaining water and becomes slightly diluted.

        The owners manuels method for adding antifreeze is to pour it in to the raw water pump outlet hose. The one between the pump and the thermostat. It should take 2 gallons.

        You said you dont have a copy of the manuel, so here is a copy you can download. Page 43 covers winterizing and 40 covers changing trans fluid.
