Changing my filter for the first time. When I removed the canister the filter was stuck in the bottom. I ended up having to push it out with a long screwdriver. The way i read the pcm manual it appears the filter should remain with the pump and not the canister. Can anyone confirm how this is suppose to be?

One of the issues you are dealing with is a filter that was not changed out on a regular service interval, however even still when pulling off the canister the filter element can still find it's way stuck to the bottom of the canister because it will swell in side and get stuck and release itself from the pump. No big deal pry it out and replace it, install the new one correctly, replace at least once a year.

Is it really necessary to replace the filter once a year? Can you just drain the water/fuel mixture out of the bottom of the canister like couple times a season and get longer life out of the fuel filter?
I know that the CC manual reccommends that the fuel filter be serviced annualy and with todays gasoline being a 10% ethanol mixture (ethanol being very hygroscopic) it cant hurt. I was just wondering if it is an accepted idea to extend service intervals of the fuel filter to biennial or triennial.

What i have done is change my pre-filter in my 2006 211, once a yr and will change my FCC filter every other yr. I don't run E-10, and have never found water in it when i have drained it, and when i have changed it the filter looked great. So on my boat that will be every other yr. I dont think its going to hurt anything. I only run about 75 hrs a yr though..

Thanks for the replies!! As far as the regular service intervals for the filter pcm says once a year or 100hrs. The boat has right at 100hrs and the filter was changed at the dealer right at 60 hrs. There does not seem to be anything holding it in the up position over the pump. The filter was lodged in the can and had to be forced out. I dont think it just fell in while removing and got lodged that tight..I could be wrong though.
