    Question re: oiling teak swim platform

    I am continuing my month long yearly duty of the oiling of my teak swim platform and was wondering, do you continue to oil it until no more absorbs, or are 4-5 spray on coats enough. The color has changed etc for the last few coats I sprayed on this year, but oil is still being absorbed over the course of the 12 hours between spraying and checking on it. Any thoughts? ideas? pearls of wisdom?

    This is how we do ours;

    http://www.boatus.com/boattech/casey/29.htm

    It will stay dark, rich looking most of the year. Plus, it will not get oily or greasying; IE slipping and busting your hiney

      When I'm starting from scratch, I usually do two coats. I start by sanding with 120 grit, sweep off the dust, rub the first coat on by hand (with the teak oil in an old windex bottle), wait 10 minutes and wipe off the excess. Let it dry completely (the sun and several days is helpful here). Hit it lightly with some 0-grade steel wool, and reoil. Wipe excess. Dry. This lasts me the whole season.

      When I'm not starting from scratch, I just hit it with the steel wool and put on one coat. My platform is functional. Not a show piece. Plenty of skis put on on it. But I still think it looks pretty good.

          Also, doesn't steel wool rust? Shouldn't you use the brass kind?

            Brass would probably be a good idea. I'm pretty meticulous about dusting off the platform before oiling. I have never had a problem with rusty bits or stains from using the steel wool on it.

              "Spray on teak oil" = normal oil placed in a spray bottle easier and cleaner for me I guess

                I do the same thing. I tend to use less this way.

                  I wipe on the teak oil liberally, with a small rag and let it soak it up.. I have 6-8 coats on this one since I bought it last fall and its still thirsty.. but getting there... it was neglected by previous owner I guess. starting to hold the color and wet look.... its not a show piece, but looks nice. I doubt you can go wrong with this method.. spray bottle with teak oil in it would be easier, just watch the overspray and do it off the boat to avoid getting it all over the back end with overspray.

                    Not a showpiece? That platform looks fantastic!
