    2001 San 210 gt40 not starting problem

Hi every one. Had a problem with my gt40 not starting. Starter motor was clicking so replaced it with a brand new one and changed the starter solenoid at the same time.
Put the boat on the water today and was working fine until one time i came to start it.
I keyed in the 4 digit code pressed start. Little green light came on. Pressed start again and i heard the starter click once and that was it nothing else happened. The keypad and clocks - everything all went off. Had to type the number in again to try again and was then ok.
Came to take the boat off the water and it happened again. Only this time it just kept doing it every single time i tried to start it.
Had to bridge the solenoid to get it going so i could get it off the water.
Once on trailer i tried again and still no good. Just seems to keep tripping out but not blowing any fuses/breakers etc. have also noticed some of the buttons on the other keypad have suddenly stopped working like ballast emoty and shower. only ballast fill and blower appear to be working. maybe just a coincidence but just thought id give all info.

    Thanks

    James

On the surface, it sounds like a bad keypad. I'm not sure what the best way to test that is, though. From what I've heard, the keypads don't have a very long life, so 10+ years might be towards the upper limit. I'm waiting for the one on my 2002 to go out on me as well. Good luck...

Clean your battery terminals. If they are slightly bad, they will pass enough current for everything, but the starter. When the starter engages, it tries to draw a very high current, and the available voltage drops down too much, and the control box does not like it.

Ok had a look today. When I first got to the boat it started first press of the start button. Then after that same thing happened. Anyway I cleaned the terminals but still no good. Definitely think its getting a voltage drop. Like you say when the starter tries to start it draws a lot of current. Im thinking possibly battery needs replacing as when the starter pulls in the volts in the battery are dropping to about 10.5 volts. Is this enough voltage drop to drop power to the keypad? Which is why I need to type code in again.
Going to change the battery clamps anyway tomorrow so know for sure the connection is good

Did you put the 2 batteries on wired in parallel? Mine only has the one battery on at the moment but i am thinking of adding a second battery to give it that extra ampage for startup.

              Thanks

Ok been playing with the boat again today. I cut back the battery cables although they seemed ok and put new clamps on and resecured them to the battery. Tried again and still the same. Put a booster pack into the battery and boat started first time every time. Suddenly wondered if the alternator is actually charging the battery at all. So had a quick look and guess what I found? Belt had disappeared into the bottom if the boat. Can't believe I didn't check this earlier. So new belt and battery now charged up every thing seems good. At least I now have a new starter circuit and good battery termination.
