Flywheel replacement on a GM 330 hp PCM Excalibur

Bad day today. I am hoping it is the starter that blew (I have one one order from Nautiqueparts) but just in case I was wondering if anyone has had to replace a flywheel on a 330 hp PCM excalibur Vortec made by GM. Would I have to pull the whole block? once again, hoping it is only the starter but preparing myself for the worse.

In my experience with gm vehicles, you will definitely have to separate the engine from the tranny to replace the flywheel. Is the starter just spinning and grinding and not engaging the flywheel? Hopefully the starter is just not engaging fully and the flywheel is not damaged. Good luck.

Have you pulled the starter and inspected the ring gear? Normally long-term starter problems lead to ring gear failure.

Just pulled the starter and looked at the flywheel as a friend turned the belt drive. No damage, no need to pull the engine thankfully. Just replacing the starter now, changing the oil and hopefully she purrs

Don't throw away your old starter. You should have a quality rebuilder around there somewhere. I have had trouble replacing starters because of the machining differences between motors, having to add shims, etc. The original one would at least be a great backup. Congrats on the good news.
