84 SN how do you drain oil?

I saw a oil line comeing down from what looks like a big long container which is probably the pump. Anyway the line has what appears to be a stainless steel plug or nut . Can i unsdrew this nut and the oil drains or do you need some type of pump to suck it out? It seems that you need a very shallow oil pan? How much oil does it hold? Can i go to a marine shop to get oil? Is it 40 W oil? Thanks in advance for answering stupid newbe question

If you've got an 1984, what you should be seeing is a rubber hose connected to bottom side of the oil pan & stored up over top of block clipped to o-ring at the top of engine.
Unclip and run out thru the hull drain hole. Warm engine. Use two wrenches to undo nut at end of hose, and drain. (I usually let mine drain overnite.)
If I remember right, manual calls for 5 qts w/ filter. However, I usually put in (4) and check it once it's back in the water. It never seems to take the (5). I've always used 10W-30 or 10W-40 & Fram PH8a filters without problem.

Please don't use FRAM filters! They are just about the worst oil filters you can buy.

This filter cartridge has a small outside diameter with a rather low filter element surface area (193 sqin), and features cardboard end caps that are glued in place. The rubber anti-drainback valve seals the rough metal backplate to the cardboard end cap and easily leaks, causing dirty oil to drain back into the pan. If you have a noisy valve train at startup, this filter is likely the cause. The bypass valves are plastic and are sometimes not molded correctly, which allows them to leak. The backplate has smaller and fewer oil inlet holes, which may restrict flow.

Many NAPA stores have a cross section training aid (a NAPA filter beside a Fram) set up to demonstrate what Jeff is talking about. It is interesting to see.

I am pretty sure that many of the last Ford engines that came from PCM had the Fram PH8A as standard, PCM just painted it black. If they are good enough for PCM then they are good enough fore me as well.

I would venture to guess that they probably would have come from PCM with the genuine Ford part, which would be the Motorcraft FL-1A oil filter. Compare the two pictures below. You can easily see that Fram filters are not designed as well as some others. The cardboard ends alone turned me off.

Thats me convinced, I was only pointing out what PCM had been supplying on the last of the Ford engines, and it was the Fram PH8A.

I know that they dont use this on the later chevys with the remote oil filter housing. Prehaps they had a few problems with engines that had the Fram on them.

Also thanks for a graet site as a newby I have picked up many helpfull tips and hints from various members already.

Hmmm... That's interesting about the Fram filters coming from the factory. Never would have guessed that. Learn something new every day.

Interestingly enough, on the newer Chevy motors, PCM uses the oil filter relocation bracket, and that bracket is spec'd for Ford filters. It's weird to have to buy a Ford filter for a Chevy engine.

Okay, now that I have TOTALLY diverted this thread from its intended topic, let me try to get it back on track. Nauti84 has given good information about the oil drain kit, but IIRC that was optional back then. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. If you don't have it, the best bet is to buy one of the pumps that pulls the old oil out of the dipstick tube. They're a pain, and they don't get all the old oil out, but they work well enough. As far as the oil type, I believe straight 40 weight is correct, but you might want to check the owner's manual just to be sure. That link might take a few minutes to download. I learned the fram thing while owning my first vehicle. I always ust the FL1A on the boat and Delco on my truck.

I respectfully disagree that this is an unfair comparison. The filter element can be made of any material you like. That doesn't change the fact that the end caps are cardboard, the anti-drainback valve is plastic, the filter element has significantly less surface area (can roughly be judged by number of folds), and the bypass valve is plastic. The only difference (at least as far as I am aware) between a synthetic filter and others is the material used in the filter element. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks for the post though. I'm another one that's always used fram on everything.
I think I saw the same link about this on a jeep TJ forum but didn't pay much attention.
Maybe it's time to make a change.
I'm also not sure if the drain kit on my motor was an option or not. I just assumed it was a standard. must've been fun changing the oil back before the dipstick pumps came out!

The synthetic fibers in these filters yield the following key benefits:

Less resistance to oil flow, reducing the potential for the filter to restrict the flow of oil to your engine.

A larger surface area to trap more contaminant particles, allowing the longer service intervals.

Who knows if there is really any significant additional value to these filters though...
