Frost Plug install at front motor mount???

a frost plug has loosened and come out at the worst spot... right behind the front motor mount of my GT 40 engine. I see that there are 3 bolts holding the motor mount onto the engine and could remove those and maybe freeup enough room to press on the frost plug... I am somewhat concerned about doing this as I may have to realign the engine??? any suggestions...oh yes,,, does the frost plug need a gasket to reinstall it as it appears it simply presses back in..

    thanks

you need to check the block for cracks since the block froze and poped the casting plug out. and no you will not have to re-align the engine unless it's all ready out of alignment.

Biggest question is why is it loose to begin with?

That is not a "freeze plug" as many people call it, its a casting plug. They should not come loose. If there was enough pressure buildup to make one come out, then I'd be worried about the condition of the engine block.

I have seen a couple come out with a mild freeze. Certainly want to check the block, but unless it was a super hard freeze, I'd bet you are ok.

To put the plug back in, loosen the front motor mounts, hoist the front of the motor just enough to get the plug back in. Oh, and get new plugs, don't reuse the old ones. Most auto parts stores will have them. You can either get a small jack under the block or come up with some sort of hoist from above. I did a friends by laying a 4x4 in the rafters then using a come-a-long and tow strap.

Just be careful. Make sure your rafters are strong. I laid the 4x4 across 6 of them.

Can you post a picture? It's been a long time since I've done it. As I remember, I secured the block to the hoist. Removed the bolts from the motor mount to the block. Raised the block just enough to put the plugs in.

                  frost plug pictures

Hi.. Here are a few shots of the frost plug.. One concern I have about raising the engine up at the front is the pressue I would put on the rear motor mounts and the shaft. I realize I would have to loosen off the other front motor mount before I do this. any suggestions?Click image for larger version

you don't need to loosen any other bolts all you need to do is support the engine at it's present location so once you remove the bolts it doesn't drop down and so the engine stays put at it's present locations. So a small amount of tension needs to be put on the cable supporting the engine block it would have been much easier to use a bottle jack under the exhaust manifold.

also make sure you get a brass casting plug.

                      job successful

                      [
I was able to lift the engiine using the front lifting ring just enough to take the pressure off the motor mount. Then undid the 2 stringer bolts and out came the motor mount. I installed a new casting plug and put everything back together..

Thanks for your info... appreciated it
