Perfect Pass No speed reading problem

Hi, Since owning my 2001 SAN, perfect pass (wakeboard pro) has only ever worked on RPM mode as the display does not seem to be getting a speed reading from the paddle wheel. I have checked the paddle wheel and all looks and feels good. I have checked the electrical connections and all seems good there too. The boat speed clock also does not work as i believe the two are both linked to the paddle wheel. The old digital clocks were removed before i brought the boat and an analogue clock was fitted.

Is there anything else i can check to ensure it is actually the paddle wheel transducer that is no good? Have checked and done all it says in the perfect pass manual to no avail.

Also i believe i have the ST200 model transducer but cannot seem to find one anywhere on the web. Does anyone know if it has been superseeded? I have also asked the question via e.mail to Perfect pass but am still waiting.

    Thanks

    Hi Hyparks,

The ST200 was a while back - IIRC, that paddlewheel has a 1 3/4" diameter, so you'd have to make a bigger hole for the ST300 2" diameter.

If you've inspected the paddlewheel connector at the CPU and everything looks okay, you might try removing the cover off the CPU and see if there is any corrosion on the traces (wires) of the circuit board. I've seen some PP units have this problem. If that's the case, you'll either have to do some solder work or replace the CPU altogether.

Also, try re-seating the paddlewheel connector a couple times and see if that helps at all.

    HTH!

    Justin

Assuming that the paddlewheel is the problem...

I think Nautiqueparts.com can hook you up on a paddlewheel if you need a replacement. I just got one from them as part of the Faria kit. Don't forget the PN discount.

If they can't, Perfect Pass can hook you up, although shipping is a bear.

Another source you can try is http://www.hydrophase.com. They might sell you the paddlewheel separately.

Finally, you can do what I'm doing, and that is scrap the paddlewheel and install a NauticLaugic GPS module instead, which masquerades as a paddlewheel as far as the computer and Faria analog speedo are concerned. You would need a jumper cable from the speedo to PP if you don't have one already, but you should. If you don't, that might be your problem.

Alternatively, I might be willing to sell you my paddlewheel after I test out this system (if and when we get some rain), as I likely will not be using my paddle wheel. It is brand new and is the new ST300.

Thanks Justin I will be back at the boat Friday so will check again and have a look at the CPU. I have seen a receipt somewhere that the guy who had the boat before had purchased a new master module with the 6.5 upgrade chip so I need to check the date on the receipt as it may be in warranty still. I have only had the boat since February so fingers crossed.
Chexi thanks for your reply and yes I would be interested but I do live in the UK so shipping may be quite a lot.
Thanks again guys for the very informative replies.
Will post my findings if I fond some lol.

Checked the connector and CPU today but still no good. Going to order a new paddle wheel. I have found a place in the uk that do an airmar trandducer. Here is the description.
ST300 9m cable. Airmar Part 31-256-2-42 with skin fitting. Raymarine ST40 shorty type.
Anyone know if this would be ok? Have looked for that part number but can't find any Info on it. Do both airmar and raymarine have the same connectors for perfect pass?

Will give them a call tomorrow anyway. Thanks

You can take a volt reading at the brain of the PP, its the green wire...should read 5-6 volts while the wheel is spinning. So have a buddy spin the wheel and see if you are getting enough signal. If not it prob the paddle wheel sending unit.

Hi thanks, Been talking to Aaron from perfect pass and he put me down the right path. Did some teste etc and came to a result of bad paddle wheel. New paddle wheel and hey presto the speed is now showing on the display.
However my speedo still does not work. There is a connector that the paddle wheel connects to. It then splits off and one goes to the PP module and the other goes to the speedo. Does anyone know how to test the speedo clock to ensure it is working and now not just the wiring to the clock?

              Thanks

I had the same problem two years ago but mine ended up being the connection to the CPU. I reseated the connector and its worked fine since. But it sounds like you've checked and double checked that connection already...

Yeah l have checked it several times. My old paddle was well corroded inside as my boat had been on the sea quite a lot so i am finding much wiring etc needs replacing and i am slowly working my way through the boat changing wiring etc.
So new paddle wheel has sorted the MPH out on the perfect pass display but the speedometer is still not working. Will have a closer look again this weekend.
                  Thanks
