We just got a 92 196 Ski Nautique, it is in pristine condition and I want to keep it that way. I am not sure the best weight oil for the engine I am thinking 20/W 40 ,it is the standard engine I believe 240 hp,also the transmision does it really use regular 20 W engine oil? . How about oil filter , canI use a standard one like a fram ?. Last one is the wate separator ,to maintain it do I just periodicaly just loosten the bolt in the bottom and drain it or is there an internal filter I should clean or repalce? Thanks alot for any info on this.

If you are using conventional oil, I like Valvoline VR1 Racing 20W50. Oil filter, use a motorcraft FL1A or a Napa Gold 51515. Don't use a FRAM, they have very poor performance comparatively. Trans will either be 20w oil or Dexron III. Just leave it the same fluid as it currently has. Get an oil extractor, suck out what you can, measure, replace with new, then check after a warmup.
Lastly. There is a filter that you can replace in the fuel/water separator. I only did it once years ago in my 90, trying to diagnose a no fuel problem that turned out to be un-related. I have not done it on any boat since. That doesn't mean don't do it, or that you shouldn't. I just do not as a part of regular maintenance.
You should also check your engine alignment. You want the coupler to be within .002 of itself, all the way around.the WakeSlayer

I urge you to burn your eyes on this thread, the guys on CCFAN have talked this up quite a bit. Let's just say the oil topic gets fairly heated!
