Is there a good battery FAQ somewhere? Preferably specific to towboats and that discusses types of batteries, multi-battery systems, replacement (how often, recommended procedures, recommended replacement batts), charging, recommended chargers, etc?

West marine has some pretty good information in their catalog, or at least they did a few years ago.
Many auto service stores have battery testers that can evaluate the battery's condition, but keep in mind they sell batteries. but if they tell you the battery is good, considering the lost sale, you can be pretty confident the battery is good.
