Hi Folks, I'm new here, new to Nautiques, and frankly, this is my first boat. But I'm well experienced in mechanical issues.
I recently bought a well maintained 1996 Sport Nautique. It has the Pro-ski 351W PCM powerplant, with the original EFI and ignition setup still on. It has 291 hrs on the meter and in pretty darn nice shape, especially for a 16 year old boat. You could eat off the bilge its so clean.
So, my question is this... I fired it off when I got it home, and let it run for 15-20 seconds, then shut it off. Sounded just beautiful. Nothing out of the ordinary. Running for 15-30 seconds without any water in the cooling system won't hurt anything, except maybe the raw water impeller, but I have a new one to install anyway. So, last night, when my friend stopped by for dinner, he wanted to see the new boat, and hear it run. So, I tried to fire it off, and she lit off just like before, but as soon as I let the key out of the 'start' position, it quit. If I would hold the key in the 'start' position, she would stay running. (but I would only do this for a couple seconds, as it's not good for the starter and other components) It behaved like it has some sort of designed cut-out or safety override designed into it.
I'm quite familiar with motors, but I don't have a wiring schematic, diagram, or even owners manual.
So, two questions:
1) Is there a cut-out that senses no water in the raw water pick up and cuts electrical to the ignition? OR ??????
2) Could someone direct me to a source where I could pick up the PCM wiring diagrams/schematics, and an owners and shop manual?
Thanks,
PE
