    2007 SANTE 220 starting issue

i took out my 2007 SANTE 220 today. tried to start boat on the ramp, click, no start. tried again click... click... click, after about 10 tries it finally turned over and fired right up. the batteries are brand new and fully charged.

i am thinking there is a loose connection or a touchy relay?

i am hoping some one around here has run into the same issue. i know it is nothing complicated.

    thanks fellas.

I'd agree with your conclusion. Did you have any issues after it started?

no issue after it was started, but this has happened before. last time out it did the same thing, boat ramp, click... try again, click... etc. after started good all day. then later in the day after listening to some tunes, same thing, click...

Yep, I'd say starter too. Kinda classic symptom of a starter. A loose wire would show up intermitantly through operation.

Its the starter, replace it. I had the starter on my 05 211 go bad every year because the blige did not turn on automatically when you started the boat and a few times the starter go submerged when we would surf and water would come in the vent and the bilge wouldnt be on.

i have full faith in the guys on this forum (and any topic specific forum). i am just having a hard time seeing why a starter going bad would give me a (click)? a starter is as simple as a solenoid (to engage the gear to the fly wheel) and a motor to turn the fly wheel. i have no problem getting a new starter but i would be sad if it didnt fix the issue.

are you guys saying it is a week motor??

It could very well be a starter. Probably the first place I would look. Remove it and have it tested at an auto parts store. Sometimes it is a weak motor, and sometimes you can get burn marks on the solenoid disc that don't allow enough power to go to the motor, but still give you a "CLICK"

If it is not the starter, I would check the power cable going to the starter to ensure enough power is getting there.

Poorly charged batteries can reduce the life of a starter. Did you put new batteries in to replace bad ones?

                Best of luck!

I'm not saying it is the starter. But the others are trying to point out there could be a bad spot on the armature where the brushes ride or in the windings and when the armature lands there randomly, ....no go. The infamous "hammer trick" sometimes confirms this. If you tap the starter and it runs, that could be the problem.

RideButter mentioned the solenoid disc can burn also. I've never seen that but it is certainly possible.

very good information. i spent some time with the boat yesterday, the engine ground was a bit dirty. spent some time cleaning it up (not easy) i will try it tomorrow at the lake.

after i cleaned the engine ground this issue has not happened again (as of yet). i will wait until it happens again before i replace the starter. i will let you all know if i do end up replacing the starter.
