Safety Switch- Boat won't Start- 90 Sport Nautique

90 Sport's (probably all) have a safety feature on them where if the boat is in gear the boat will not start. Often times in the past the boat may be in neutral but a quick jiggle of the throttle and it would fire right up. All of the sudden over the past few weeks it has gotten severely worse and takes some time to get the boat to turn over and I'm convinced this is the reason why. If anyone has any advice on something I can adjust or if need be, replace please let me know. Thanks,

to verify that it is the neutral safety switch ...attach the two white wires to the same post on the neutral saftey switch located on side of the transmission. If this cures the problem then you need to replace the neutral safety, detach the two wires and unscrew the neutral safety switch and replace with a new one and reattach the wires.
