    Humminbird Depth Finder

I am looking at the humminbird HDR 600 in hull depth finder. Has anyone had any problems with this unit? I am thinking I will mount the readout in the clock space rather than drilling any new holes in the dash. My local marina has it for 150. but I see it on Ebay for 80.

    Any thoughts or recommendations??????

    RE: Humminbird Depth Finder

I have a 2001 super sport with the HDR 600, and it is erratic as to when it decides to work, at low speeds it always registers 1.5 feet, making it useless when you need it most - navigating in unfamiliar or potentially shallow waters... I see on techsonic's website that the 600 model has been discontinued, I think the 610 model resolves the software issues I seen referred to in other posts.

Same issues as jrmorris...I wouldn't recommend it...changed out head units once and moved transducer 3-5 times....still works occasionaly..not sure if its the unit or the fact that its a thru hull.

My dad's bass boat transducer (also humminbird) hanging off the transom works perfectly.

I am on my second unit as the first never worked correctly. Under warranty my local dealership installed a new unit just before I winterized so I dont even know if it works until April when I launch but I have other Nautique owners with the same problem. I may end up with a Faria if this unit does not work.

I hated my previous teleflex depth finder (I think it's made by hummingbird) gave reading less than 50% of the time. My new Faria unit with the sensor that floats in mineral oil works great.

I too considered the Hummingbird but after many negative responses I decided to go with Lowrance. It was expensive but it has performed flawlessly.

Mikeski, where have you located the depth sounder? Does the Hull have a core?

I had a HDR 600 and it acted up on me. Since I bought my boat used, I called the manufacturer and they provided a replacement free of charge. THey said it was a manufacturing issue and replaced it no questions asked.

Good job, you had better luck than me. I had called them and actually got what seemed like, a fairly knowledgable support person who walked me through the 4-5 things to try and fix it....which had already been done. But no acknowledgement of any issues etc. She did say the 610 had a different style of transducer.

I might replace it...sounds like good nods from Faria and Lowrance...I'm a little leery of giving humminbird another chance with the 610.

I purchased a 610 on ebay for less than $90, it is installed but I haven't put the boat in the water yet. I still have to test the transducer location once I drop the boat in, I'll report back after I use it a few times.

My Teleflex unit was in my 1995 SN, sender mounted just below the oil pan slightly off to the side. I remounted it 3 times and replaced the sending unit once, same poor results no matter what I tried.

The new boat (2005 SV211) came without so I added the Faria that matched my gauge package. It is mounted in the rear plug access hatch off to the other side from the paddle wheel. Works great.

I believe both boats have solid glass hulls in those mounting areas.

I just bought an 03 SAN signature that doesn't have a depth finder. Where is everyone mounting the gauge?

Update - after much negociation (sp?) I got a customer service rep at Hummingbird to swap it out (only the gauge/computer) for a new 610, which I finally installed and tested today after work and I was happy to see it's working like a champ.

Note, if you also follow up with Huimmingbird on this issue, make sure these send you the transducer cable adapter since the connector changed with the 610 model - I had to wait an extra week & half after receiving the 610 while they shipped the adapter out....
