Transmission problem??

I have a 1980 nautique and recently after pulling several skiiers the transmission doesn't feel as though it properly engages the gears. It will run fine but randomly when I open the throttle the boat does not respond (accelerate) as it should. The engine sounds as though it is running the same but I can tell the prop is not turning as it should be. I have no idea what the problem is? Trans fluid is fine. Any ideas??
