    E15

I just read in the USA Today that the EPA is going to allow E15 at gas stations. The station will have to put a label stating the harm for vehicles before 2001. Funny this happens when I start noticing problems with E10 in my boat. I'm having some vapor lock issues and the culprit is probably E10. I talked to Vince at Skidim and he's been seeing a lot of vapor lock due to ethanol's lower boiling point. Right now I prop my clam shell and I'm fine. I really hope E15 doesn't get forced.

Is this why we're seeing Flex Fuel Vehicles (FFV) being manufactured, in order to handle the variable grades of fuel that are coming our way?? I know there is a big divide in opinions regarding whether ethanol has any harmful effects, but just what is the difference that makes an FFV vehicle?

Leave it to the EPA to further support a product that is only available because our tax dollars are used to compensate the value that is actually lost in its production.

What surprises me is how few pure gas stations there are in Texas. Texas of all places has the attitude to say **** no on this crap, but for whatever reason it doesn't.

I'm getting fuel medic to try to stave off the harms of ethanol, which are well proven at this point. Those who have experienced no problems with ethanol use have just not noticed... yet. Stick it in a chainsaw and leave it sit for a year. There will be the proof.

Growing the corn for ethanol is basically raping the Earth anyways. The rate at which crops are grown and harvested to keep up with the demand degrades the soil & nutrients. Never mind the fact that it's causing food scarcity and huge fluctuation in food prices across the globe. I think the figure is something like 60% of all U.S. grown corn goes towards fuel rather than food.

Just some interesting points to throw out there...thank you NPR.

^ This is the real reason ethanol won't die. There is too much vested interest in growing corn. ADM has a lot of money to pay lobbyists to keep forcing this crap down our throats. Remember MBTE? The EPA report on how that crap was poisoning the ground water was buried for years. Now we have massive groundwater problems thanks to MBTE.

Of course, this is not much different than compact fluorescent bulbs. Sure the light they produce sucks and they are full of mercury, and no one wants to or knows how to dispose of them... but hey let's force them down everyone's throat anyway. Good way to sell more and more expensive light bulbs.

              /end rant (for now)

How about this in Texas. Our utility district was forced to change from well water to surface water. For surface water, a different chlorine derivative is used to sanitize the water. The new chemical happens to also clean the residue from the inside of galvanized pipe..... thining the wall such that pinhole leaks appear.

                Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

And just where did that eaten galvanized metal go I wonder? Not into your drinking water I'm sure. I'm really becoming a curmudgeon in my old age.

Not all of it goes to the drinking water. Some stains the toilet and then gets flushed. Some soaks into the laundry. Good thing for my coffee filters so, of course, my coffee is contaminant free.

Back on topic. I now have two vehicles with flex engines. I guarantee you that i will not fill it from an e15 station. I'll get in line with the beaters that can only take e10 and sponsor stations who stick to their guns. I might even take along a hydrometer or the marked test tubes for the water trick and make sure they aren't stickin me with e15.

Heck, we should just switch to E100 so I can fill my tank and my jigger at the same time. E is made for drinking, not powering engines. I could pipe a slip stream off the fuel pump return and top off my glass at red lights. I guess the only problem there is we couldn't fill up after 9 pm and on Sundays.

I read somewhere that the goverment subsidies and tax breaks for using ethanol was going to be reduced. Guess that is not the case if we will be seing E15 soon.

That's been the norm for several years now.

Are you confusing e85 and e15? e85 is 855 ethanol, where e15 is only 15% ethanol. E10 of course is 10% ethanol.

Corn is better used as a fuel than food. Basically no farm animals can digest it, and it is largely waste product.

I think before e15 is adopted widely, butanol will be the non oil fuel.
