Lanyard had been jumped and checked, no power to fuel pumps, 60amp breaker is good, power on both sides, fuel and eec relays are good. The 12.5 breaker has continuity but no poweron either side, the 15 breaker has continuity but no power on either side. The eec relay does get power when the key is turned on, I can feel it and hear it. Cannot figure out why there is no power to the 12.5 or the 15? anyone????? Please, kids are on my rearend!!!!!

Got the boat out for the first time, July 3rd, after 9 months in the garage. The GT-40 purred at first key turn, my wife and I put two hours on the meter and four hours on the lake with multiple stops and restarts. Getting ready to head to ramp and nothing on the key turn, faint clicking sound under hood. No tunes all day but ran the blower quite a bit, we cruised a bunch at idle out. We waited 30 seconds with no blower and it turned right over. Got home and checked battery showed 12.7, this is a new EverStart 56-3N (580 CCA). I think more CCA's are required on this engine than what is specified in the owner's manual of 350 as a minimum. I've read on this site and others about a second or even third battery on board, we plan on carrying a second battery from now on. already have jumper cables on board. Mind you, I'm not sure how much different a 97 GT-40 is to a 95. Just a thought, Thanks. If anyone has installed and hooked up a second battery on a 95 196 (maybe in the cooler?), let me know, Thanks.1995 SN 196(Sold)

Given the fact the engine started first time and you ran for hours before the no-start problem, I'm betting your starter relay needs replacing. A single, faint click is a good indicator. When my relay was going bad, the engine would start cold without any problem. After running a while (engine box was now hot) and then trying to start, it would give me the single click. Sometimes with a number of tries it would finally hit, fortunately. The part is not expensive and fairly easy to replace.

Thanks Jasper for the input, we have had this issue in the past, and the first time it happened a jump start from another boat turned the boat over immediately so we replaced the battery. I charged the battery, but it then sat for several weeks prior to use. Could this still be a relay issue? We had been starting and stopping all day in 92 degree heat? And the clicking wasn't a single it was ripping with the hood open, you could hear it. Thanks again for the feedback.1995 SN 196(Sold)

Jasper is right on. Those are a very common failure part on those boats. My '94 went through a couple while I owned it. Same symptoms.I own and operate Silver Cove Marine, which is an inboard boat restoration, service, and sales facility located in Mooresville, North Carolina. We specializes in Nautiques and Correct Crafts, and also provide general service for Nautiques fifteen years old and older.

I did not have the ripping clicks (but my sample size =1). But the problem still sounds like the starter relay since it started on the first try. Jeff is right about the relays being a common point of failure. Usually weak battery or bad connection problems will materialize on the first start. Do as ripnsix suggested and clean the terminals well and make certain they are tight.
