'99 Pro Air Turns over but won't run

My '99 Pro Air turns over and basically runs for what seems like about 3 seconds then simply 'shuts off.' In neutral, my father-in-law can keep it running if/when he keeps the starter motor/ignition engaged. This does not apply when we try to put it into gear. He
theorizes that a resistor, one designed to run the system at 6-volts vs 12-volts, has gone bad. True? False? Anybody have this
experience and/or suggestions? Thanks for your help

Check the safety lanyard. Most common problem, the clip came off the button. Second most common, bad connection in the wires behind the switch.

"Lanyard." Daniel, you've saved my weekend; many thanks. And, I can't believe I forgot such a simple item...
      Thanks again.
