I was on someone else's 2000 SAN yesterday and noticed a sound I don't hear on mine. At certain rpms, there is a whistling noise. I think it is the prop, but it could be coming from somewhere else. I have noticed this same noise on some other boats. For example, a 2008 X-star I ride behind from time to time has a very pronounced whistle. Does anyone know whether this is just a sound made by certain props? Or, is it something to be concerned about?

It may be the engine air intake. Some engines "whistle" more than others. My GT40 whistles a little bit, and I have a couple buddies with the LTR engine option in their Mastercrafts that whistle a TON -- almost to the point I'd almost be scared to stick my hand around the engine compartment or it might get sucked in!

Even though its not a boat, I have a 5.7L Tundra with a performance K&N Cold Air Induction system on it. It whistles like crazy...even at idle and can hear it from inside the vehicle. Its probably the air intake.Comment

I might just be the prop. I had mine redone on 2002 Sante and they didn't "sharpen" the edges of the prop and at about 8 to 10 mph it would whistle so bad it hurt your teeth. I took it back to the shop and they but a bevel on the leading edge of the prop and the whistle went away.Comment

I have heard sounds coming from boats with tracking fins at certain speeds, but it's more like a high pitch hum than a whistle.Comment

Weird. None of my 3 inboards had/have the whistle. I'm just fine without it, but it seems very common, so I'm surprised I am 0-3 or 3-3 depending on how you look at it.Now
