Do not assume your oil pressure gauge is accurate. If you are really worried, you need to have a mechanic put an accurate calibrated mechanical gauge on the engine.

General rule of thumb is you need 10 psi per thousand RPM. Keep in mind it is not oil pressure that lubricates the engine, it is oil flow.

Ditto... It would really probably be better to just have an idiot light. Red if there is no pressure. hehe. Leave the gauge out of it.

You guys are probably jumping to conclusions. He is probably worried his pressure is too high.

With the 15w40 PCM recommends, my pressure runs 60+ plus cold and rarely if ever falls below 40. In my 99 Tahoe with the same engine and 5w30, the pressure is much less and in line with the 10/1000 rule. I'm sure oil temp is much hotter as well.

About every 15 to 20 hours I wipe out the top of the remote filter...a few moles of oil must seep out when the pressure is high at startup. I don't know the design pressure of the canister filter...but I know it ain't much more than my high pressure.

ps - not sure I agree much with the flow not pressure comment. Pressure is key to make the hydrodynamic bearings work. Flow carries the heat away.

great, thanks. Boat runs between 35-40psi on tickover, maybe gets to 45 @2000rpm or so, so looks about right then! my old Ford engined 190 used to run at about 50-60 pretty much all day

The 10/1000 is a minimum and a rule of thumb. Oil pressure too high is just as harmful as too low. Cold engine will have higher pressures.

            Your engine sounds fine.
