    v-drive oil pressure-any common failures?

Hi all, I was going to cruise over the the marina yesterday to pick up some ice and as I was idling out around the point I noticed my v-drive oil pressure light would not got out. Came back to the dock to the check the oil level and it was a bit low, just under the low mark on the dipstick. Added probably 1/2 a pint to bring it up to full, but the light would still not go out above 1200 rpms. I'm thinking maybe the pressure switch is bad, but with almost 1000 hours on the clock anything is possible. Does the switch close when pressure is reached or does it open? I'm assuming the v-drive contains a gear-rotor style oil pump. If this is so, failure seems unlikely. I don't have any tools at home with me this weekend to check it out, but I thought I would jump the two wires together on the switch and see if the light goes out. If it does, I have a bad switch or have lost oil pressure right? My next step would be to bring an oil pressure gauge set home and check the mechanical oil pressure, but I can't do that until next weekend. Has anyone had any issues with the v-drive oil pressure light that is full of fluid? The boat is a 1997 super sport. Thanks for reading.

Here's a good thread, I think most of your questions are answered.

Thanks for the link Foilhead! Just took the boat for a spin to see what it would do. The pressure light when out at about 2000 rpms then never came back on again, even at idle. I'm thinking bad switch at this point. The switch is grounded on one side and is closed until 2 psi is achieved. Once 2 psi is reached it opens and removes the ground circuit that lights the bulb on the dash. I'll call White Lake and check on availability tomorrow. Glad my problems don't seem as bad as the dude's in the link you provided.

Yeah, that thing scares the he:$ out of my checkbook, and I'm not a big fan of the light because I'm not sure I would notice it doing something different right away.
