    Engine over heated!!!

So I took my 1993 Nautique in to have the damper plate replaced, but when the work was done there was still a clanking sound. The guys at the shop said it should be fine for the rest of the summer. So I get out on the water and get going when i took it over 25 mph the gears started to slip and would not go beyond 28 mph. There was a loud ringing noise so I slowed it to under 25 and all was fine. By this time I was a good deal away from the launch while cruising back to the launch the boat started to overheat!!! Unfortunately, I had to cruise it slow for about 10 minutes while it was running hot and I hope there was no serious damage done. I could smell smoke so that is definitely not a good sign. Any suggestions?

First, I would take it back to whoever did the work and explain what happened.

To me it sounds like you have multiple problems. The first being that something was not installed correctly when they replaced the damper plate. The second sounds like you may have a vaccum leak in the cooling system. Check every hose for cracks and every connection (tighten with a socket wrench, not a screwdriver). Check to make sure the water strainer has it's gasket in, and make sure when you put it back together the bowl is tight. Check your thru-hull intake for a clog. I would also recommend checking the raw water pump impeller. It's probably in pieces at this point.
