    Grinding noise in neutral

I have a 98 Super sport w GT40 and an rpm perfect pass, Occasionally I get a grinding noise when it is in neutral, it happens randomly & sporadically doesn't matter if I ran it for a couple hours or just started it up no real pattern, occasionally you can hear a light "rubbing" sound when its in gear & then it will be brutal grinding in neutral. If I turn the engine off I can immediately restart it & its fine no noise.
Any ideas? I called the people that serviced it last & they said it would need to happen more consistently before they would be able to track it down.
someone suggested possibly the started trying to engage,
I doen't believe its the transmission just had that serviced & fluids changed 40 hours ago (2 months ago), can't totally rule it out
    any ideas
    thanks

After cruising the forums & the internet it sounds like it might be the key ignition switch shorting & trying to engage the starter, I have seen posts of similar noise from newer Nautiques that are having problems with their keypads, & then on some other sites other brand boats similar problems
Hope replacing the key ignition switch solves it.

I hope this is it, but I don't think it would cause the slight rubbing noise you hear. If the starter is engaged, it's going to be loud and sound horrible and you would know it's the starter. It sounds like this may be happening to you in neutral. But, it does not explain your slight rubbing noise. I think there is a neutral position switch on the tranny which might be the culprit. These are known to go bad. What tranny services were provided?

The transmission service was just basic fluid / filter change nothing heavy.
I changed out the ignition switch today but didn't get time to cruise around the lake(at least it started), Probably will take it out in the AM.
Is the neutral position switch the same as neutral safety switch? I have not had any problems starting the boat which alot of the posts mention with the neutral safety switch, but I will keep that in mind, it did seem like you would start hearing a rubbing sound in low forward or reverse and you knew that it would start grinding in neutral in the near future.
        Thanks

Got it out on the lake & did not have any problems, was only out for maybe an hour. But I am hoping that solved the problem. Didn't hear any rubbing it had been an intermittent problem but the last couple of times out it had happened, and was starting to happen consistently. So maybe it has been fixed if not I will update.
