2003 SANTE running rough and stalling

Out on the lake this morning and the boat was running great for the first set.
After about an hour the boat started running real rough, sputterring and eventually quit.
Got it restarted a couple times but it eventually stalled.

Got it home and checked the distributor cap and rotors (I'm guessing this is the problem)

I replaced it only 1 year ago though... is this normal?

      never been in salt water.

I did notice I've had a ton of water in the boat recently from rain (apparently the new cover doesn't protect as well as the old one, it's sharkskin material)
Also this morning when taking the cover off I noticed the under-side was soaked with condensation

Not sure if it's related or not...

Hi, I watched your video and my problem is different. My sputters harder and will stall out.
It seems like the more strain the engine is under the quicker it would stall out

The contacts on the distributor cap is what is shown in my picture

Check fuel pressure and/or tap the low pressure fuel pump when sputtering too. Had same symptoms earleir this year and turned out to be the lift pump.

have a similar problem on my 03 SANTE, however my sputtering seems to be happening after i idle for a while like when teaching a newbie to get up, the constant circling and short pulls, it will start sputtering and trying to die out, i can rev it in neutral to riding rpm's and not experience the problem, almost seems like it builds up too much fuel in the system, i can turn it off, wait a minute, and then fire it up back and make normal pulls the rest of the day, sound like your problem?

problem started last summer and local marine pcm certified mechanics went over it and over checking fuel pressure all along the supply line and could not find anything wrong, weird thing is it doesn't happen all the time, the mechanics put it in the water the first time, took off, and it went to sputtering, checked everything out, put back in the water and took off again with no issues, they drove it wide open for about two miles across the lake and back three times a day for a week and it never happened again, loaded it up with ballast and all the extra bags i could find and fill in it and they could not reproduce after another week of them running at 23mph, stopping and starting, but never just idling around for a while first, i'm kind of stumped and they are too

Nico, you boat is in reduced RPM mode

Your engine control module thinks that the motor is running hot or has low oil pressure. I know your gauges show ok but the ECM uses different senders than do the gauges. I would start by checking the oil pressure sender that is wired to the ECM. It will likely be the smaller of the two. I don't know which motor your boat has but the oil pressure senders are likely close to the oil filter boss. If you motor has a remote oil filter follow the hoses from the filter boss to the boss on the motor. Is you check engine light on?

definitely could be in limp mode for him, the one time i forgot to check my oil a couple of weeks ago (was just under normal range) my boat starting running hot and went into limp mode, added most of a quart of oil, let it sit for about five minutes, and the temp went back to normal, wonder if that might be my issue as well, however the gauges are normal and the red light low oil pressure warning never comes on

I second the fuel pressure check.

wakebrdr, that cap has seen better days but it might not be your only problem. like drock said you really need to see what your fuel pressure is when the problem is going on. If the lift pump is crapping out the FCC will go low on fuel and the high pressure pump will have no fuel to pump. There should be a Schrader valve on the top of the FCC where you can measure the high pressure fuel.

Don't forget the rotor when you replace the cap, I imagine it looks about like the cap.

See the attached file for fuel pressure specs.

slidin_out, which motor do you have. I don't think the limp mode is activated by low oil level, just low pressure.

honestly i'm not sure limp mode even came on, just got the red warning light under the leftmost gauge about engine temp, happened when i stopped to turn around after a fall

                            Thanks for the info gmdattilo.
I'll need to get a fuel pressure guage so I can check it out.
In the short time I had after work today I went ahead and replaced the cap, rotor and also the fuel filter.
Took it for a quick spin and it ran perfect, although I only had it out for about 15 minutes...

One odd thing that happened though that has never happened before was after I put the boat on the trailer and pulled it out of the water, a minute or two later the exhaust released probably 1-2 gallons of water in one big gush. anybody have ths experience before?

                              Hi

For my problem i check my rotor and distributor and it was like yours

But it was not the problem

                              It was a prefilter problem

You have to check fuel pressure , very easy!!
