2002 SAN - Starts Cold But Not After Warmed Up

I'm looking for a little help.

Just picked up a 2002 SAN and the boat has not been ran much in the last 2 years. When I took the boat out for a test it ran great except one time it would not restart for 15 minutes. I was hoping bad gas.

Gas was completely emptied then filled plus I added the "Startron" Enzyme Fuel Treatment.

A few times today the boat cut out or would not restart after it was warm. Cranking just turned the starter over with no firing. Flood start did not do much either.

Solution was to let the boat rest for 10 minutes or so then it would start. Once it is running the engine sounds great.

Plan is to change the fuel filter. Q: Will any fuel filter work or does it need to be a "marine" filter from the dealer?

What else could be causing the problem? What are your thoughts? What would you do?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Likely the ignition module for either engine.

The engine is the GT40 (PCM 5.8 HO).

Is there a best way to determine what the problem is? If it is the ignition module is it easy to change? Ballpark cost?

If by ignition module, Airtool is referring to the ignition coil, it is super easy to change. It's on top of the motor, and if I remember correctly it's just 2 screws or bolts. You can find the part at most auto parts stores, but it might not have the barb on the connector, so the coil wire won't be locked on it as well as the factory original. I just zip tied mine on.

Note, if you have a fuel control cell, when you decide to change it, you will need the special filter for the fuel control cell, which you can find at nautiqueparts.com.

I doubt it is the ignition coil.

Note diagnosing these intermittent and/or heat sensitive problems is not easy.

You probably can take the ignition module to your local auto parts for testing. The ignition module (proper named "thick film ignition module" is a little over 100 bucks from PCM. I cannot confirm if there is a crossover to an auto version for cheaper $$. There probably is...but I can't guarantee it.

Chexi might have a "known good one" he can share with you.

If you take it off, use the white thermal paste when you go back with it...not silicone grease.

You'll need to provide more data for us to do more diagnostics.
