1997 SS gt-40 oil change help for newbie

So i thought to chg the oil. I would just pull this line from oil pan thru hull drain plug. I did but no oil came out. Do i need some special oil suction machine? Also. Can i get the oil filter from any auto parts store and what oil do yall run/recommend?

Also take the oil fill cap off, it will help with the draining. I get the oil filters for the nautiques I work on at NAPA. I run Amsoil in our boats, but just about any oil will work.

I use a Pella 6000 vacuum oil extractor (http://www.dieselgeek.com/servlet/Detail?no=303). You simply put the tube down the dipstick to the bottom of the pan. It works by pumping it about twenty times and it creates a vacuum which sucks the oil into the canister. It's absolutely the fastest, cleanest and easiest way to drain your oil.

After I'm done with a trip at the lake, and the engine is hot, I pump out the oil in the parking lot while I'm wiping down the boat. Just make sure your boat is level. It takes about 10 minutes with hot oil. After it's drained and sucks air, I drive home and do it again to get any remaining oil that has settled down to the pan. It get more oil out of the engine than you will by draining it out of the bottom and it's super easy.

Then I take off the filter. I put several towels and a bucket next to the engine to protect the interior from oil drips. I place a handful of paper towels under the filter and wrap it with a 1 gallon ziplock to help contain the oil from the filter when you remove it.. It works better if you let the engine sit for a while and cools off a bit. No burns and less mess.

Wipe off the drips of oil from the engine and inspect the oil filter housing on the engine to ensure the filter gasket isn't stuck on it. When you replace the new filter, wipe your finger over the new filter gasket with a little oil prior to screwing it on. Tighten firmly by hand. I use Napa Platinum filter 41515. It's a newer version of the popular Napa gold 1515.

Fill it with 4 quarts of Valvoline VR-1 Race Oil (40wt for most applications) or other high ZDDP oil specifically made for flat tappet (GT40) engines. Warm up the engine on the water or garden hose for 5 minutes and generally add another quart to bring it up to full. I've recently switched to Valovoline's Racing VR-1 Synthetic 20-50wt It's also specified for flat tappet application and lowered my oil pressure from 60-70 psi to about 50 psi. I swear the engine runs smoother with the synthetic and believe the multi viscosity will ensure more efficient lubrication on start up. Just try stick to a 50 hour oil change with either oil and you'll be good.

I'm a big fan of vacuum oil extractors. I convinced that I get out more oil out of most of my engines (unless I had some sort of tapered pan that would prevent the extractor tube from reaching the bottom of the pan).

Thx. I had bought a 12v pump from carquest. Thing was junk. I got the oil changed with vr1 20w-50. Next time ill switch to the synthetic vr1. I ordered a pela 6000. I did not like the 12v pump

I just posted a link on my GT-40 1995 Super Sport Oil Change.. if you need it.. click the link in my signature.
Also, I noticed that a local store offers a drill-driven liquid pump for minimal dollars. I would think that would also work if you get the adapters to fit the 1/4 NPT fittings into a plastic jug.. might even work faster than the Pella (which I just got too)...

Pretty straight forward maintenance without having to break the bank or pay someone to do it, and the best part is if you have to buy the tools, then you have them for future maintenance....

Do u think the pela works better using the drain hose rather than the dipstick ?

Drain hose for a couple reasons.
                1) the drain hose is larger diameter than the dipstick hose.
                2) the drain plug is at the lower portion of the oil pan. The dip stick is not directly aimed at that area
                3) the dip stick (on the gt-40) is in the middle of the oil pan actually on the higher portion so putting the pella hose down the dipstick hole may not make it to the bottom of the pan. It is a two level pan. The pella hose may not be flexible enough to make the bend to reach bottom of pan (but not confirmed). I didn't even bother to try it.

Easier to pull the drain hose thru transom and connect to pella than to stuff it down the dip stick hole in my opinion.
