1997 SS depth gauge not reading. Need help

I have a 1997 ss, see below. The depth gauge, has power, and can set the alarm for depth, but wont read how deep the water is. I know nothing of depth finders. Its in the stock gauge dash cluster. Where should i start to get this fixed?

Honestly, I would just buy a new one. Those era depth gauges were notorious for only lasting a few years. One of the problems is the transducer is puck mounted to the floor. I believe the ones where a hole is required in bottom of boat are probably more reliable.

Your problem is with the transducer is my guess. It should be glued to the hull just forward of the engine. You could do some research to see if the still make a transducer for your model. If they don't then a new unit is under 100. You could look for one that does depth, air, and water temp. I just put when in a 90 Sport at the beginning of the year. It was a Faria and has an inside hull transducer. Pretty easy to install. If you have an inside mount transducer and you don't hear or feel it ticking... It is dead.

How does the water temp work. Do u have to drill a whole in hull for temp sensor? I think i just need to go with depth finder only. Whay is the dash size opening? And where did you get yours from. I want to get a in hull one.

First step, make sure all the wires are plugged in, or hooked up to the depth sounder. Obviously the power wires, you already checked that.
There are two types of transducers. The through hull, that is about a 2 or 3 inch "puck" glued to the bottom of the hull, ahead of the engine, usually. The second type of transducer has a small, about 1/2 in diameter pickup, located on the transom of the boat, and the wire for it goes into the boat somewhere. This wire is a continuous cable that goes from the transducer, past the engine and V-drive, under the floorboard, by the gas tank, and then under the floor past the drivers seat, and then up through a hole that is in front of the drivers feet kick panel, and then up to the dashboard.

In 1997, accessories on Correct Craft boat could be installed at the factory, at a regional service center, or at the selling dealer. There is also a possibility the original owner did the install, but that is unlikely.

One place to check the water temp is in the raw water hose, before it goes into the raw water pump. Somewhere around the raw water strainer is a convenient place. You must be absolutely sure you get the connections sealed up, because any leaks will suck air in to raw water pump, and this may reduce it's ability to prime, or reduce the cooling of the engine.

Thx. Illdo checking tonight. I kmow gauge has power. Just like it aint getting signal. Ill check behind gauge to see if hooked up. And trace rrom transduecer. Assume it has puck style. Cause there is not one one trasom nor do i see anything coming thru hull.

Use an epoxy to bond it to the hull.

This is the same one I installed. I had put in a Perfect Pass so I used the airglide's pick up hose hole in the transom for the temp sensor. You can also t it in to the lake water pick up. Not necessary to go with the air depth if you don't care. Gauge size is 2 1/8 standard. I bought mine from the cheapest online place I could find and make sure you order the in hull transducer.

The Faria transducers are mounted with silicone to the hull, it's a cup that holds antifreeze and the the transducer fits on top. I liked that idea better than epoxy when I installed mine 3 years ago, so far no problems. I pulled the floor and mounted it between the Vdrive and the gas tank lots of room there and easy to access. You need to have some space to measure and make sure it is aimed correctly. Once you have a spot, set it on a gallon ziploc bag of water to make sure it reads at speed, then mount it permanatelly.

I replaced my hummingbird (factory) with a Faria Depth/Air/Water Temp gauge. Since I had upgraded my Perfect Pass to SG, I wasn't using the paddle wheel for anything but water temp for Perfect Pass. I special ordered a thru-hull (not expoxied in hull) transducer from Faria sized to fit the 2" paddle wheel hole and replaced my paddle wheel with the transducer. Water temp went out the old Airguide speedo hole at the transom. Air temp sensor is under the dash pod.

At first I thought the cup transducer would be a pain to install. I have installed two other pucks that you epoxy to the hull in the past. However, it was really easy to install the cup system and I like the fact that you can now replace the transducer if you need to.
