Ballast pump replacement, Attwood Tsunami 800? 2000 SAN

My ballast pumps are bad. They sat for years and don't work... the motors are difficult to turn by hand, I'm thinking just a total replacement is the best way to go. I pulled them out, and they are Attwood 750's... I can't find the direct replacement online, but I'm finding an Attwood 800 'Tsunami', and an Attwood 1200 Tsunami. Are either of these direct replacements? I'm sure they'd mount in the same place, but I'm wondering if the wiring is 'plug and play'. Do I have to cut the old wires and use the same plugs?

also, is there a benefit from going with the 1200 GPH pump with the stock 'plumbing'? Seems like the lines are maybe too small to see a big advantage from going with a bigger pump.

The Attwood 750's are the stock ones that come in the 2000SAN. In my old boat, I replaced the Attwoods with the Rule 1200. It wasn't a direct replacement, you have to modify the plumbing some. I ended up replacing mine because in 2000, CC used the clear/black plastic ballast hose. When routed under the motor, it got really brittle. Eventually, they quit using that hose.....probably for that reason.

The photo is a comparison of the replacement and the stock ballast pumps before I installed them- the one on the left is the Rule 1200 and the one on the right is the stock Attwood 1200.

No matter what pumps you use, you'll have to tie in the wiring yourself. It's pretty simple. A positive and a negative.

Yeah I am finding some pretty brittle hose in there trying to figure this system out. The one way valves at the vents were stuck, and pulling them to un-stick them resulted in some broken hose. That's a pretty tight bend at the vents...pretty much maxed that stuff out.

Two wires I can figure out! Thanks. Is it safe to assume that if I go close to the original GPH rating, the new pumps won't draw more power and blow fuses? Or should I be checking how much juice they draw?

The Tsunami 1200 won't be a direct replacement, it uses 1-1/8" inlet and outlet. The Tsunami 800 uses the standard 3/4" inlet and outlet. Chances are your plumbing is all 3/4" on the inlet side but you may want to check just to be sure.

Yes it is all 3/4...thanks. I'm thinking I'd have to reduce it back to 3/4 at both tanks anyway, so I might not see much of an advantage from the 1200 pump.

shonuff is correct, all your plumbing is 3/4" so you'll have to reduce the 1200 down. When I changed mine out, I didn't see that noticeable of a difference. The aerator pumps just aren't that efficient. If you are going to replace everything and keep the boat for a while, I would go with the Jabsco reversible pumps but they are $$$$.

Can you replace the 2 separate pumps with 1 Jabsco reversible one, and wire it so that the 'fill' and 'drain' buttons on the dash still work normally?

I know this thread is old but I was curious how your install and your wiring ended up?

^^ I went with the Attwood 800's...basically a direct replacement as far as install. Since this thread, I've also pulled out the hard tanks and replaced with bags, tying them into the factory plumbing as far as the pumps and vents go. I put a T in the fill line and a valve going to each bag, so I can fill one for surfing while completely shutting off the supply to the other one. That was always a problem with the factory system..it didn't really shut one side or the other, it just shut the 'vent'...so pressure would build up and not as much would go to that side, but plenty of weight would still go to the wrong side. The whole system works great...takes a while to fill the bags, but I can live with that.
