    Trailer Problems and New Parts!

I have had trailer problems all year. I am somewhat of a new boat owner and do not know much about the trailers. Currently I do not have bearing buddies or an oil bath or anything like that. I have burned at least 2 sets of bearings this year. On my final one, I heated it up so much that the outer race melted to the spindel. I found a kickass trailer shop in downtown Indianapolis called Waymire Industries. I am purchasing a brand new drop axle and 2 brand new hubs for around 250. Not a bad price at all. This is going to be quite the project for me the next couple of days and I am racing time due to the dropping temperatures. Pics will be posted of the whole project and of the boat inside and out. Any advice on anything will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If bearings are adjusted and greased properly, you pretty much can ignore them, for several years.
This is absolutely not recommended, you should do more maintenance than that, but you should not have gone through two sets of bearings in a single year.

The trailer was the original so it is 27 years old, so Im sure it has the original axel. Its really no worries. Ive got the axel and spindel and hubs on order and will have them in a week. It will make maintaining the bearing alot easier too. I will post pics when I get the axel in.

I like Waymires, but if you get stuck and need install help, Schwartz Trailer on the north side does a great job and seem to really know their stuff.

1.) Get the boat off the trailer if possible. This will make life significantly easier
2.) Get a friend with a little muscle to assist, things will go much faster
3.) Get air tools and breaker bars lined up in case bolts dont want to budge
4.) Think about where to get replacement mounting bolts etc if needed as they may or may not come with new axle
5.) If you have brakes, which i assume you don't, get brake fluid, someone to help bleed etc.
6.) Might want to consider buying some extra marine grease seals in case you damage one on install. Keep the extra for when you re-pack next year.

You must have a damanged spindle or something to be roasting bearings that much. This should solve your problem as long you are maintaining correctly and using the decent bearing grease.

        Good luck
