Barbarian Needed To Help Remove Fuel Control Cell!

I have a 2003 Ski Nautique 196 LE with the Ex-Cal Engine. The Fuel Control Cell canister is on so tight, it won't budge! I had it off 2 years ago and replaced the filter, wanted to do it every other year, but ARGH! Any insight? I put grease on the o-ring and threads last time, and didn't over tighten. The first time was a bear, and it took 2 people using 2 different oil filter wrenches at the same time.......

Gotta be a better way, other than a mail order barbarian from "What's in your wallet?"

I use a heavy duty strap wrench. It has worked on two different GT40 fuel cells multiple times.

Strap wrench is good. Try using your legs, they are much stronger than your arms.

Once you have a good oil filter wrench, the strap type, I put my foot on the bottom of the FCC cannister, to counteract the tendency for the bracket that holds it to bend.

Bought a strap wrench and going to give it another try. Wonder if the barbarian might be cheaper than the strap wrench at the local hardware store......

When I was working at WCCC, on the really stubborn ones, we'd remove the whole unit and put it in a bench vise, canister down, put a couple of sacrificial bolts into the mounting holes and use a long crow bar and unscrew the top off.
One good thing about this method is that you don't spill fuel into your bilge or onto your carpet.

This worked sweet on an 01 filter that had not been off for 8 years!

Use two filter wrenches at the same time. It will come off.

Not saying this to insult. Just throwing it out there to help in the already knuckle breaking task of removing the canister. Are you sure your turning it in the right direction?

Lefty loosely righty tightly... Funny... These are notorious for being really difficult to get off.... I think my Nautique Doctor told me to put anti seize on the threads when I change the filter.

They are actually threaded backwards from the top. I was told to think of it as you were looking at it from the bottom up. So looking at it from the top down it would be backwards threaded.

FCC - Concoured!

Not to sound "smarter than the average skier/mechanic," but yes, I understand the lefty loosie, righty tighty principle and can decipher that when the item is oriented such as the FCC.

To avoid getting fuel in the bilge, I have a funnel with a long flexi hose that I run out the bilge drain and into an oil drain pan located under the boat. I bought a strap wrench and a better oil filter wrench (one with a few ribs in it). Together I was able to use my hands, feet, and some body leverage to break it free.

Once again, I put it back on loose and put lots of grease on the threads. I hesitate to put anti-sieze on those threads, notknowing how it would react with fuel......

Anyway, got it off and back on. Now I just have to wait for warm weather again...... Guess I will break ot the snowmobiles!

I has able to use the double strap wrench technique to loosen my filter this weekend.
