V Drive & Transmission Oil Change

    Hey guys.
Having some difficulty changing out the oil in my V drive and son't want to have the same issue with the tranny.

I have the Walter V drive / PCM trans combo in my 2003 SAN

I have a vacuum pump setup that worked perfectly for the engine oil, but I've only been able to get around 200ml or so from the V Drive.

I don't have a good seal against the dipstick tube and is is sucking air. Is this my issue.?

I'm also not at the bottom of the housing by using the dip stick tube.

I have done a bit of a search, but didn't turn anything up about this issue.

    Any ideas.?

There is a drain plug low and on the side. On mine the easiest way to get to it is to pull the floor. I've heard of people getting tubes stuck in the gears which required removing and splitting open the Vdrive to fix. That would waste any time you might save doing it from the top.

To empty the vdrive in my boat, I used to have to remove the floor and remove a plug on the backside of the unit. The oil would run out in the hull and out the bottom drain. What a pita and mess. I put a drain hose like the engine oil on the back of the unit in place of the plug. Now, floor stays in and I drop both hoses out of the bottom hole into a drain pan. I cannot get the vacuum pump into the sump of the vdrive because of the plumbing configuration of the oil fill itself. If there was only a way to drain the transmission without a vacuum pump, I would have it made.

I did something similar to ski4evr with mine. I thought I wrote a DIY thread on it but could not find it. I replaced the plug on the bottom side of the v-drive with a 90 degree hose barb fitting. I then attached some hose to that with a small shut-off valve. Now whenever I want to change the v-drive fluid I just attach vacuum pump to the valve, open it, and let it do the work. It made a mess the first time to install it, but from now on it's clean and easy.

That's a great idea, I'll have to add this to my list of tiny projects for the weekend.

Take some pics of your mod. After draining the oil you still need to clean the screen and the magnetic plugs but getting the oil out will make this much easier!

Here are some pics... They were easy to get since my entire boat is torn apart right now for a stereo project I'm doing. Anyway, the little valve at the top of the pic is connected to a piece of black hose. That hose runs down to a 90 degree brass, barbed fitting. I had to get a 1/2 - 3/8 or 1/4 adapter can't remember what size to screw into the housing and then 90 degree fitting screws into it. True fully, I didn't look at the manual when I did the fluid change so I didn't know there was a magnetic plug or strainer, but the plug I'm draining from is the lowest point on the v-drive so once the fluid is drained you should have no problem puuling those without any fluid coming out.

Guess I need to pull mine and make sure everything is okay.

I like that set up but man lose that speed quik plastic valve. I been in the plumbing supply biz for 20+ years and i can tell you its not rated for those temps nor oil. Pm me and I will send you a valve for free. I'd hate to see that let go on you one day.

I used it because it fit the tube of my oil pump. I kept the valve up high to keep the possibility of leaks to a minimum and make it easier to access. I'll PM you to see what kind of valve you had in mind.

The weatherman missed the forecast today so no weekend boat projects for now. I've gotta have some sunshine to get motivated, I'll make a list when I get to it.

The V-Drive is shipped without oil and must be filled with recommended oil before
operation (See below). DO NOT USE SAE 80 MOTOR OIL, OR MULTI-GRADE
OILS SUCH AS 10W-30 OR 10W-40. Listed below are the approximate oil
capacities; actual quantity of oil required depends upon the angle of installation.

                            RECOMMENDED OILS:
