I'm looking at a 1999 Pro Air Nautique with this engine in it, but I don't know anything about it. Can anyone provide any information--good or bad?

As I recall, the biggest issue with these engines is that some of them did not have the remote oil filter. They used a standard Chevy oil filter, that screwed on the bottom of the block, near the flywheel, on the left side of the engine. It is much easier to change the oil filter with the remote. There is a kit available to change to a remote oil filter, and some 5.7 EFI engines may have this done already.
I think there were also two versions of the 5.7 engine, a multiport injection engine, and a throttle body injection engine. Multiport engines have eight fuel injectors near the cylinder head intake ports. Throttle body injection engines have injectors mounted in the throttle body, at the top of the intake manifold. Multiport is more desirable.

Chris is right, it's the Apex. It's a nice engine, so don't take what I'm about to say the wrong way. I was able to run a SN with the Apex, then got to jump into a SN with GT-40. It was not an intentional comparison, just a lucky day. Had I never experienced the GT-40, I would've been completely satisfied with the Apex. Experiencing both, I'd prefer a GT-40. It just made the boat feel much snappier, even with the lower hp rating. However, I believe you can plug in the Apex to get a true hour reading.'08 196LE (previous)

Indeed that's it. It'll serve you well, if you go that route. Not a fun oil change however - PCM got a little Indmar'ish in this one!'08 196LE (previous)

Just buy a pump and pump out the oil through the dip stick tube. Oil filter relocation is worth the money. If you don't, you end up spilling oil in the bilge and you have a big mess. I would never converted and would have several rags below to catch any spilt oil. Several different kits are available or you can make your own. The GT-40 is left hand I believe so the prop would be different. A 351 Windsor and a 350 Chevrolet are basically the same. I have had both. The prop matters more. Definitely don't get the 8.1L Python in one of these boats in less you really need it. It sounds mean but uses a lot of fuel.
