    Hour Meter

Over the weekend, I was cleaning the boat and listening to the radio and noticed the hour meter moving even though the engine was not running. First, is there a way to just have the radio on without increasing the hours? If not, how do I guesstimate the number of actual "running" hours that are on the motor? I have an 89 2001 with "989" hours, but since the past 8 months since I have owned it, most of my hours came from docking up with other boats and just relaxing while the radio was on. This doesn't seem right, being that if I try to resell the boat with a greater # of hours than I have actually run the boat, it would cause greater depreciation. Am I correct?

    RE: Hour Meter

I'm pretty sure our '88 isn't wired like that. The hour meter only works when the engine is running... But I'm not 100% sure, I'll take a look of the boat comes out of winterization...

Something is wrong. Your hour meter should only run while the motor is running.

Take a look on Correctcraftfan.com and you will see some wire diagrams in the reference section that may help you out. It sounds like a previous owner may have rewired something. You can take your dash out and trace the wires to help find the problem.

The chances of me taking the dash panel out and re-wiring are shall we say, slim to none...I did talk to my dealer and he said he could wire my radio straight to my battery if I wanted. The question now becomes...if I have them do it that way, will the alternator still charge the battery? Remember you're dealing with an electrical idiot....

your hour meter is connected to the ignition side of the ignition switch. Not only will the hourmeter run while the switch is on but if you still run points it will cause your points to burn out if they happen to stop open partially. I would wire the radio straight to the battery with an in line fuse. Just remember to turn it off. Or you could find an ignition switch with an acc. position. This will only power what you have connected to it.
