laurie88 - I think there are several threads on this subject (engine oils), not sure if for your specific yr/engine. One thread was, I think, titled "Oil Question" which you should be able to search for. You might search for "engine oil(s), oil weights, oil brands" etc for more possible threads. This is a subject, IMO, based a lot on personal preferences. Hope this gives you what you need.

You could drop PCM a note...my experience is they are very responsive.

my experience is they have terrible service. and for some reason they just have to skip some years for manuals. anyways, don't quote me on your newer engine, but my 2005 5.7 takes 15-40 and i use shell rotella t(4-5qts depending on what comes out); as do most on this site. my manual says dont use synthetic. if im not mistaken the newer manuals(newer engines) say it's ok.

That would be very surprising. There is no problem using synthetic in your engine. PCM is very careful to explain that they do not recommend using synthetics in order to extend oil change intervals but theres nothing wrong using synthetic itself. That goes for any motor. A roller motor like your '05 will be extremely tolerant of pretty much any oil in the proper weight.

I use the shell rotella 15/40 from my understanding it's one of the last over the counter oils you can buy that still has a special ingredient / lubricant that is essential for new engine/camshaft break in, and always good to have in your engine.

                This is bad info.

Again, the newer roller cam motors in question do not need the additional zddp like the older flat tappets do- this is probably what youre referring to as the "special ingredient".

There are better choices than the Rotella 15w40 for the flat tappet motors, though. Valvoline VR1 20w50 and Mobil1 15w50 are 2 of them.

For the roller cam motors, which are very tolerant of oil, the Rotella is perfectly acceptable, though. Pretty much any Diesel oil in the 15w50 range will be just fine- including the Delo.

I have always used the mobil 1 synthetic 15/50 in pretty much everything I've owned since its inception, and never had a problem (Bronco with a 351 and 200,000 miles with no leaks or usage, other cars, boats with up to 700 hrs) I was recently told by my dealer that PCM might not warranty things if I used synthetic, but after referring to my manual (2009 230) it states, synthetic may be used, but not to extend oil change intervals. Since my dealer gives free oil changes, I will just let them do it until the warranty runs out. My 07 Sierra needs a different oil - I am using a Castrol synthetic that meeds the requirement in the manual. Apparently the newer motors have closer tolerances and require a slightly lower viscosity, yet still with protective qualities. I believe oil tech has improved too.
BTW, both Autozone and Advance Auto parts have some good "oil change" deals going on now. I even found the special oil my VW Diesel needs at Advance. 5qt or a 5.1 gal jug and a free K&N or Mobil 1 oil filter for about $32. I stocked up.

I asked the synthetic vs dino oil question to the lubrication engineers back when I worked for Chevron (I had access to them). The one who I spoke with said he saw no benefit or drawback from using synthetic for the marinized automotive motor in my boat. I know of some gearbox rebuilders from motorcycles that recommend against synthetic. One of my buddies used Mobil 1 exclusively from day one and swore by it until the oil pump gummed up and caused the motor to destroy itself. Today he will not touch synthetic oil.

I have use 15-40W Delo in my boat exclusively since my first oil change (ex Chevron employee here). I would also use most other 15-40W dino oils in my boat but the thermal benefits offered by synthetics are not needed in our cool running boat motors.

just my opinion after I did the research with those I trusted when I was making my decisions about oil 5 years ago. I won't say anybody here is wrong but there are definitely some opinions being stated as facts.
