I did remove the starboard tank but didn't touch the gas tank. Unless the steering cable was done differently on newer models, you should just be able to remove the rear seat and the flooring over the gas tank to access the cable. My old cable was run along the starboard side of the gas tank and then up through the ski locker. Once I had the tank and floor up, it took me about 20 minutes to remove the cable. As mentioned above, I'd suggest repacking the rudder since you'll already have everything else off.

1999 ski nautique...leave the gas tank in and just work in the tight space. It saves time overall. If you have the heater install the hoses come thru the same hole behind the steering. I suggest when you do the pull thru you put soap and water on the heater hoses to make pulling the steering cable thru that much easier. Don't even attempt without using the old one to pull the new one thru.
This can be a three hour job. Four if you drink more than 1 beer while doing it. -Marc

Just did the steering cable on my 2004 SAN210TE. Spent the better part of an hour trying to get it fed through the hull underneath the gas tank. Looks to have a dedicated channel that's JUST big enough to fit the cable end. Ended up cutting it, then running it to the side of the gas tank. Works perfect.

Just did this a month ago. Worlds of improvement in terms of smooth and easy steering.
Mine replacement also didn’t use the original housing. And routed adjacent to the fuel tank.
Use some anti-seize on the tube housing threads so it will come apart easy next time.
If it won’t break free hit it with a mapp torch and even some cold water after.
Thermal expansion might break free any corrosion.
Also I found the upgraded teleflex extreme part for about $125 with a google search. Much cheaper than other sources.
