    2007 196 Steering Cable

Is there a trick or special tool to disconnect the old steering cable (aft)? Not from the rudder, but from the bracket under the fuel tank? Any other tips or tricks specific to the 196 with the L shaped fuel tank?

    Thanks

Now I realize I was trying to turn the wrong piece. I ended up unbolting the clamshell. I think it would have been easier to just remove the entire bracket. Next question is do you remove the cable with the end tube still on then remove and install on the new cable? Also I was unable to remove the center section of the rear deck, is it bolted down some where under the tank or just stubborn? I hope to finish this up and get on the water tomorrow.

They need to do something about these steering cables. I have a 2007 211 and it is getting hard to steer it, just like my 99 SN. on my SN I just took it off and found a way to lube the thing up and it worked good again, but it took a lot of work to get the lube in, I would of been better off replacing it for the amount of work it was. now the 211 isn't going to be as easy as the SN was to take out and I'm very frustrated about it, having two boats now with the same problem and about the same amount of time using them.

Is there another replacement that would be better so I don't have to deal with this again?

Sorry for hijacking your thread but I thought this might be just as good of a place to state this as any.

I did my 2005 SV211 last winter. It was a major undertaking, partially because of my subwoofer and amplifiers in the driver's footwell but also because the factory had tie-wrapped the cable to the stringer before installing the center ballast tank. I replaced the factory 19'6" cable with a TFXtreme 20' cable. The extra 6" allowed me to make a larger arc from the helm down into the floor. The boat now steers much easier than it ever did from the factory (I mean much easier). Last weekend I put a new cable in my 1996 slalom boat with a rotary steering assembly, $90 for a new cable and 2 hours to remove and replace it. Gotta love the ease of service with a direct drive. I recommend the 20' TFXtreme cable to anybody considering a new cable.

I was able to get the new cable installed. The heater made things a bit more complicated. I ended up pulling both hoses to get the cable through and then the heater hoses did not want to go back through the bilge. I was unable to remove the rear bench or center floor section. I'm sure there is a simple soluion but I did not find it.
