Replace Trailer Tires at 6 Years

It's Spring, if your trailer the boat, consider replacing the trailer tires after 5 years, especially if you have a single axle trailer. Those tires will look like new, but will blow. Happened to me last year, ended up sitting on the interstate with the trucks blowing by at 70 MPH - it is not worth the risk. I just put on Maxxis M8008 tires, this are one load level higher than the standard tire, also you should have steel values, not the rubber ones... These cost me $135 per tire including tax, mounts, valves.... If you leave anywhere between Raleigh NC and Greensboro - Southern Tire in Burlington, worth the trip. They helped me last year when I had the blowout. Your other alternative is the Goodyear Marathon.

I just got the same tires installed a few weeks ago after having 2 Goodyear Marathons create bulges in the tire sidewall. The first one happened year before last and the other last season. Decided to go with the Maxxis after reading bad reviews averywhere about the Goodyears.

Good advice and one can google DTO tire code to learn how to determine the age of their tire.

Also, if you get new tires or have an old one at the shop...don't forget to get it balanced. Often people skip that step. (The wheels on my new Ramlin' had no weights....just sayin').

When you do balance, agree with the shop on what weights will be used (hammer on, stick on lead, aluminum, outside, inside, etc.) ....especially if you have fancy wheels.

Ditto the brass high pressure stems.

Did this last year. Swapped a pair of GY Marathons at 5 yrs old for some new Maxxis.

In the process of doing this but going with Carlisle ultra sport radial. Last year a good size chunk of tread came apart on my road master tires. 5year old tires, tread looks great but age says it's time.

Seriously, what the heck is going on with trailer tires? I never used to have a problem but the new ones seem to do this and, from my research, the Goodyears are some of the worst. I lost two on my car trailer just last summer and the shredding tire really messed up my fender.
