    2000 SAN New Owner

I'm proud to say I am the new owner of 2000 SAN with 263 hours at the time of purchase, with that being said this my first inboard and i'm not to familiar with them. Before purchasing the boat I test drove for it for an hour or so with no problems that I could see or hear, I also had a friend compression test which everything seemed to be sound. The only issues are bad ballast pump and a wire broken off of the perfect pass, i'm wondering how and what else I should check and can look for to make sure everything else is in proper working condition. Any feed back or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

          Do you have perfect pass?

How do you know the number oh hours on the engine? I ask because there are unscrupulous people out there who do not tell people that the digital gauges almost universally failed And were replaced with the analog gauges, which restarted the hours back to zero. If you are relying on the analog gauge for hours, it is not correct and has the understated. You cannot get hours from the engine either if you have a gt40. Your only guides are possibly perfect pass, if it has been in the boat since day 1, or if you have a work order from a reputable shop that had the hours listed, the previos owner had the gauges changed out before the digital ones went bad, and you are adding the new and old totals. Other than that, you just have to judge the boat on other indicators of use and abuse. If you have a python or apex, I think you can get hours from the engine computer. I'm nit trying to be a jerk. I have the same boat and made the assessment to buy it without knowing the hours. After fixing one problem with my distributor, it has run strong.

The SAN was purchased from a friend of a friend, that being said the analog hours were at 56 at the time of purchase and all maintenance records were givin to me with the boat. The gauges were replaced by the local nautique dealer at the 200 hour service and are verified by the service records. It runs very strong I'm just looking for some tips on thing I might need to look for as this is my first inboard. I appreciate the feed back.

Sweet Boat! That trailer is something else.

You can get the replacement ballast pump at walmart, it will look a little different from the old one because they changed the style around '05.

Don't worry about the hours too much. Like Chexi said, there simply is no way to know for sure. If the engine is strong and the boat not thrashed, it has probably been well taken care of. These engines can go 2000 hrs in fresh water. If it's running in salt or brackish you've got to really flush it well and consider parts like the exhaust manifolds and risers as maintenance items to be checked regularly and replaced as needed.

              Can we see more pictures?

EDIT: Whoops, got called away from the computer before I could finish this post and missed your response. I just looked back at the picture - is that your '03 Premier on the rack? Great wakeboard, I just retired mine for a '12 Timebomb in January.

It's in great condition and stayed on a fresh water lake,it has a closed loop cooling system which is a plus because I'll be in brackish water from time to time and there are no signs of rust around the manifolds or bolts. I'll get some more pictures shortly. Thanks

Good deal and sweet boat. I just wanted to be sure.

Buy a new impeller kit and keep it with you. If you see the engine temp go above 160, your impeller may have lost a fin or two or shredded completely. Run a search on how to change the impeller. It is easy if you pull the hard tanks. Harder if you don't. Mark the top of the pump. It is possible to put these in upside down, and if you do, they won't cool the engine. Carry the tools you need in your "in the boat" toolkit. This is probably the number one thing to know.

Run the blower when you are stopped or idling. We have all forgotten to do it, but try to remember.

Check the prop and shaft alignment. You probably have already, and you would probably have noticed it when test driving it if there was a problem. Check the v-drive oil and tranny oil for milkiness (they are 2 separate units).

Download and print all the manuals from this site.

Check for water and other leaks along the engine and hoses of course.

Check to make sure you have a reasonable water drip on your shaft to keep it lubricated (when the boat is in the water).

Clean out your cooilng water strainer.

These engines are pretty solid. There is not much to really look for. You could have it hooked up to a star tester to check for error codes.

Also, you can get the ballast pump from nautiqueparts.com with a 10% discount from this site (in case you don't want to buy from WalMart).

Just ordered 2 of the attwood 800 gph pumps from nautiqueparts.com for my 2000 SAN. They are a bolt-in replacement. The stock ones are 750's and they don't make them anymore. If you want to go up in capacity, you have to do bigger ballast lines or reducers, which kind of kills the point of having a bigger pump. The 800's are only 40 bucks or so.

How do you get the discount at nautiqueparts.com? going to get a gauge kit soon and 10% would be nice.

Nice, real nice. That is one clean sharp looking boat. Congratulations!

I really loved my '03 Premier also. I can't tell from the picture, but those kinda look like Byerly boats to me.

                              Thanks for the pics.
