2006 220 dash water temp guage

Where does the in dash lake water temp gauge get its info from? Mine was reading funny at times at the end of last year. This moring showed 139 F and I'm pretty sure the lake is in the 40-50 deg range. It shows the air temp accurately cuase it said 39deg this morning.
